A successful concrete pumping job starts well before the truck arrives on site. Whether you’re organising a house slab, driveway, retaining wall or commercial pour, taking the time to prepare beforehand can help avoid delays, improve safety and keep the project running smoothly.
If you’re booking concrete pumping in the Shoalhaven or Illawarra, here are five things to check before the pump arrives.
1. Check and Clear the Access Route
Concrete pump trucks are large, heavy vehicles that require safe access to the setup location. Before the day of the pour, inspect the access route from the street to the work area and look for anything that could cause issues, including narrow gates, low-hanging branches, fencing, soft ground or tight turning areas.
Access can often be more restricted than it first appears, particularly on residential sites. If your site has limited access, let your concrete pumping operator know during the booking process so the right equipment can be arranged.
If rain has softened the ground, this should also be discussed beforehand. Pump outriggers require stable ground to operate safely and poor conditions can delay the setup process.
2. Identify Overhead and Underground Hazards
Overhead power lines are one of the most important safety considerations on a concrete pumping job. Boom pumps can reach significant heights and safe clearances must always be maintained.
Before the pour, identify the location of any overhead power lines, trees or structures that could affect the pump setup and operation.
It’s also worth considering underground services. Water, gas, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure may affect where outriggers can be positioned. If you’re unsure what services are present on site, obtain service plans before the day of the pour.
3. Coordinate Your Concrete Delivery
A concrete pump without concrete to pump is just a large truck taking up space. Coordinate your agitator (mixer truck) deliveries to arrive at the right time and in the right sequence. For larger pours, this usually means staggering deliveries so there’s a steady flow rather than a gap followed by a rush.
Make sure the concrete mix is specified correctly for pumping. The aggregate size, slump, and cement content all affect how well the mix moves through the hose. Your concrete supplier can advise, but as a general guide, a 10mm or 14mm aggregate with a slump of around 80–10mm works well for most residential and commercial pump jobs. Get this locked in before the day.
4. Make Sure Everyone Is Working to the Same Plan
Communication plays a major role in keeping a concrete pour running smoothly. Before work begins, ensure the builder, concreter, pump operator and any other contractors involved understand the site layout, access requirements and pour schedule.
A quick discussion before the truck arrives can help avoid confusion and reduce downtime once pumping begins. The more organised the site is beforehand, the smoother the pour is likely to be.
5. Plan for Washout
Once pumping is complete, the pump and hoses need to be cleaned out. This process creates concrete residue and washout water that must be managed appropriately.
Before the job, nominate a suitable washout area where material can be contained and allowed to harden before removal. Washout should never enter stormwater drains or waterways.
Having access to a water supply near the washout area will also help speed up the clean-up process at the end of the pour.
